Some market projections point to scalable autonomous public transport in Europe. But what about workers in the sector?

Recent projections by movingfutures show that autonomous public transport could gradually scale across Europe over the next two decades, following natural fleet replacement cycles. The technological shift in transport (automation and digitalisation) will become tomorrow's reality.

However, the expansion of automation, digital systems and data-driven operations will urge traditional job profiles to evolve, and new competences to become essential: digital supervision, systems integration, cybersecurity, advanced maintenance and remote fleet management.

We will need proactive reskilling strategies to counter eventual competence gaps risk widening across regions and sectors. The ReSKILLING Project is addressing these aspects by analysing how emerging technologies transform skills needs across the transport sector, and by identifying inclusive reskilling pathways for a fair, human-centered transition.
